¿WHAT IS BALMASEDA?

Balmaseda was granted the status of Villa (Town) on 1199 making it the first Town founded in the Lordship of Biscay.

Balmaseda’s cultural and historical heritage is the result of the different peoples who have passed through the town and contributed to the enrichment of its cultural heritage while leaving their particular mark. Many relevant historical events have influenced the history of Balmaseda: the Romanisation process, the development of the medieval town in the shadow of the soaring castle, pilgrims from the whole of Europe on their way to Santiago, the flourishing of trade between the high plateau of central Spain (the Meseta) and the Cantabrian coast, the consequent arrival of entrepreneurial and hard-working Jews...

The present-day town retains an unmistakable medieval layout, with four main longitudinal streets running parallel to the Cadagua river (Bajera, Camino Real, Correría and Cuesta streets), speaking of a distant past. The growth of the town from the 19th century onwards forced Balmaseda to expand beyond its surrounding walls, which were ultimately knocked down. The Old Town remains largely preserved.
